Texas Hold'em vs Omaha vs 5 Card PLO

UNDERSTAND THE FORMATS

The Three Victory World Variants

Texas Hold'em

Each player receives two hole cards. Build the strongest five-card hand from the seven available cards. You may use both, one or none of your hole cards if the community board itself is best.

Good for: New Poker players and anyone who prefers simpler starting decisions.

Texas Hold'em guide

Omaha

Each player receives four hole cards, but a valid hand must use exactly two of them together with exactly three community cards. More combinations create stronger draws and made hands.

Good for: Players ready to evaluate connected cards, nut potential and redraws.

Omaha guide

5 Card PLO

Each player receives five hole cards and still must use exactly two with exactly three community cards. The extra card creates even more possible draws and overlapping combinations.

Good for: Experienced Omaha players who enjoy highly connected hands and complex draw structures.

AVOID THESE

Common Poker Variant Mistakes

  • Using one Omaha hole card: Omaha and 5 Card PLO always require exactly two.
  • Using three Omaha hole cards: A valid hand can never use more than two.
  • Overvaluing small flushes: Extra hole-card combinations make stronger flushes and redraws more common in Omaha formats.
  • Playing every connected hand: More possibilities do not make every starting hand profitable or strong.
  • Ignoring the board: Always identify the strongest possible five-card hands and how the turn or river can change them.
  • Forgetting the timer: Choose the available 30-second or 70-second turn time that fits your experience.

SAME HAND ORDER

Poker Hand Rankings

All three variants use the same standard five-card hand order:

  1. Royal Flush
  2. Straight Flush
  3. Four of a Kind
  4. Full House
  5. Flush
  6. Straight
  7. Three of a Kind
  8. Two Pair
  9. One Pair
  10. High Card

The difference is not the ranking order; it is which cards each variant permits you to use.
